Engadine High School to take on the world in F1

By day they're mild-mannered senior students from Sydney's Sutherland Shire, but by night Megan Kirk, Josh Crawford, Laura Kirk, Chris Jenkins and Evan Pignatelli are marketing managers, design and manufacturing engineers working to build the fastest miniature F1 racing car in the world.

Working under the name Motion Racing, the Engadine High School team's mission is to compete in F1 in Schools, the world's largest science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition.

The program involves over nine million students from 17,000 schools in 31 nations with Formula 1 supremo Berni Ecclestone one of the competition's co-patrons.

The team who count ANSTO as one of their key sponsors and an in-kind supporters are part -of-the-way to capturing their dream having secured the coveted National Champions title in May this year.

They spoke with ABC over the weekend about the work that goes into building these cars that weigh no more than 52 grams.

The victory in May was thanks to the dedication of all team members who built their high performance car from scratch and some expertise shared by people like ANSTO engineer Samuel Batty.

Batty met with the students on a number of occasions both at ANSTO’s Lucas Heights campus and their school providing mentoring in the areas of project management and design methodology as well as feedback on their presentations and portfolio.

With that victory in Melbourne under their belt, the team now sets its eyes on the ultimate prize - world champions.

They will be heading to Texas in the United States in November to compete against the best schools in the world. Learn more about their upcoming trip on their website.

We wish them all the best and look forward to catching up with the team on their return.
