August Distinguished lecture speaker: Peter Doherty

Nobel Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty's general lecture on immunity and Killer T cells at the  Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation's (ANSTO) Lucas Heights campus will go down as one of the highlights of our calendar in 2013.

The former Australian of the Year's high level talk about how the body’s defence mechanisms deal with viruses and bacteria was both informative and entertaining with a packed auditorium, including a number of guests from the public listening to anecdotes about Professor Doherty's work, along with some other interesting tales.

About the talk

Professor Doherty focussed on the role of killer T cells, which are part of multi-faceted immune system that along with the brain, and its various peripheral sensors, is the most complex of all body systems.

The veterinary surgeon and researcher in the field of medicine has been researching immunity for the influenza virus for over 20 years. His work led to him being jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996.
