The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) School Science Medals help school Principals to recognise and reward their students for efforts in science, and related subjects.

ANSTO is home to cutting-edge Australian scientific infrastructure including the country’s only nuclear research reactor, OPAL, at Lucas Heights, and the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne.

The beautiful medals are designed to inspire an ongoing interest in science and, hopefully, a career in the science, technology or engineering spaces for students with special aptitude in the area.

ANSTO scientists and other representatives will be on hand this month to personally present medals to nearly 40 students from across the Sutherland and Illawarra regions, as we well as greater Sydney.

“These medals are about inspiring and encouraging students with ability in science, engineering and mathematics to chase that interest into a career,” said ANSTO’s Education Manager, Dr Bridget Murphy.

“There are too many stories about declines in the numbers of students pursuing mathematics and the sciences: which are skills the future Australian population and economy will need more, not less of.

“As custodian of some of Australia’s most advanced and interesting science infrastructure, we reaching out to those young, clever kids and telling them about the wonderful, fulfilling future career science can provide.”

In addition to the annual School Science Medal Program, ANSTO runs a number of other programs throughout the year aimed at reaching out to, and sparking scientific interest from, young Australians.

ANSTO’s Discovery Centre runs regular tours for school groups and individuals throughout the year, with a record 15,000 people choosing to do those tours last year.

Additionally, ANSTO brings science to the people with its enormously popular Fact or Fiction events, hosted across Australia throughout the year.

Schools or parents wishing to get involved in the ANSTO School Science Medal program, or wanting to arrange a tour, should contact the Discovery Centre on 02 9717 3090 or [email protected]
