The CEO of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Dr Adi Paterson has signed an agreement to strengthen ANSTO’s collaboration with its counterpart in South Korea.
The partnership between ANSTO and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) will see the two institutions work together across a number of research fields, allowing scientists from the two countries to collaborate on areas of shared interest.
The agreement was signed yesterday in Seoul by Dr Paterson and the President of KAERI, Dr Myung Seung Yang.
Dr Paterson said the agreement not only benefits researchers by providing access to the best facilities and scientists in both countries, but provides an important link between the two countries.
“ANSTO has a valuable relationship with KAERI that dates back to 1990. Under the agreement, ANSTO has been working with KAERI on fields of mutual interest such as the effect of radiation on materials used in reactors, which ultimately assists in the improvement of reactor design.”
Under the agreement, other areas of co-operation between the two organisations will include education and training, the operation and maintenance of research reactors and related experimental facilities, neutron beam studies, and the application of radiation and nuclear science and technology to border security.
KAERI undertakes research and development across a broad spectrum of technologies in the nuclear arena.
