2011 is the United Nations’ International Year of Chemistry. This is a global celebration of this critical scientific field and looks at how chemistry shapes everything in the world and contributes to our wellbeing.
Chemistry underpins a major part of research at ANSTO, research that has great benefit to all Australians, from the nuclear medicines we produce to the analysis of water stores.
Now you have the opportunity to join in the celebrations and find out more about our achievements in the field of chemistry thanks to a travelling science exhibition which has opened in Liverpool.
The ‘Chemistry and the Nucleus’ exhibition tells the story of how radioactive isotopes play a starring role in our lives every day whether it be through medical treatments, the food we eat or the activities we’re involved in.
Some of the topics include:
- Revealing the inner you – how nuclear medicine uses radiation to diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses.
- Send in the neutrons – how neutrons offer unique and versatile ways to study materials.
- A date with a radioactive clock –The radioactivity in materials can be used as a clock to find out how old the item is.
OPAL - a gem of Australian science – Australia has one of the world's most versatile and efficient nuclear research reactors.
ANSTO has partnered with the exhibition organisers, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), on this unique project. The exhibition will help educate thousands of Australians as it embarks on a four year road show that will cover over thirty locations across the country.
