Reprocessing of research reactor spent fuel

The following is to ensure clarity of ANSTO’s statements on conditions associated with the reprocessing of research reactor spent fuel.

All wastes (residues) arising from the reprocessing of spent research reactor fuel from HIFAR and the replacement research reactor at COGEMA’s La Hague facility will be returned to Australia in accordance with contractual obligations and firm commitments by the Australian Government.

COGEMA has estimated that the total of these residues from reprocessing HIFAR fuel will amount to only around 6 cubic metres of longlived intermediate level waste.

This waste will be returned to Australia for storage at the Commonwealth’s national intermediate level waste store – this will not be located at Lucas Heights
